Happy, Healthy Body – Stay Active

Happy, Healthy Body – Stay Active

So how are your new fitness goals going? I was reading an article the
other day that said many fall off the wagon when it comes to their new
goals because the drive and hopeful glow begin to fade. Its totally
natural to go into the new year all amped up and driven, with even the
best of intentions falling short.

WHY? Why does it happen to us? And more importantly, how can we make
fitness and staying active a part of our weekly routine? We ultimately
want staying active to become a part of us. Something we do without
thinking about, like taking a shower or brushing our teeth.

One of the reasons some of us give up on our new goals, is because
honestly, change is difficult. It takes persistence, sacrifice, and
consistency to stick with it. Or maybe we went into it with huge goals
and we bit off more than we could chew, so to speak. Whatever our
reasons, there are things we can do to get back on track and achieve
our goals.

One thing you can do is find an activity you like to do, and start
small. This has always worked for me in the past and sometimes when I
get off track personally, it helps me to go back to basics. I love to
walk to my neighborhood park or do any activity out in nature. I also
love to dance, and my Zumba class fills that need to shake my groove
thing. Its okay to set a really small goal like setting aside just ten
minutes a day, if that’s all you can do in the beginning. All of us
have ten minutes we can squeeze in. Chances are once you begin you
will love moving your body, so much you will continue to do it for a
longer period of time. Don’t forget, the idea is to just start doing
something. For most of us, starting small will become a habit and you
will want to do more.

Why not try some activities you have never attempted before? Its your
life and your adventure. You set the rules. Maybe you have a friend
that wants to run a 5K? Or maybe you want to research places in your
area to go hiking? How about trying some winter or summer sports
you’ve never tried before? As you expand and explore your fitness
activities, why not have fun with it? You may find a new sport you are
passionate about.

Another idea that might help, is to shift your focus from the number
on the scale to how exercise makes you feel. Do you have more energy?
Are you sleeping better? Are you healthier? How’s your self confidence
and mood? If you are discouraged because you are not seeing results
quick enough, set goals to see small improvements along the way. Sit
down and write out all the areas in your life that has seen some
improvements, big or small. That will motivate you to see how you have
benefited and keep going.

So don’t get bummed if you have noticed you are having a hard time
kick starting your fitness goals or sticking with them long term. The
important thing is your brush yourself off and get up again. You got
