Happy, Healthy You – Stress Relieving Exercise (Covid Edition)

This global pandemic is having an impact on us not just physically, but emotionally and mentally as well. Pandemic fatigue and the stress it has caused is very real. One effective tool to relieve our stress, and keep it at bay, is exercise. “Exercise produces a relaxation response that serves as a positive distraction,” says Cedric Bryant, chief exercise physiologist for the American Council on Exercise. He says it also helps elevate your mood and keep depression at bay. You’re not the only person who will benefit from more happiness and less stress in your life. When you’re less stressed, you’re less irritable, says certified trainer David Atkinson, and that could improve relationships with your mate, kids, and co-workers.

It’s important to find an exercise you enjoy doing and that’s actually fun, like swimming, hiking, riding bicycles, walking, etc. And once you can actually start enjoying exercise, you will find that they will want to do it more often, making it a part of their weekly routine. It can help you melt away the stress in your life which will lead to greater happiness. In fact, studies show spending time in nature can help relieve stress and anxiety, improve your mood, and boost feelings of happiness and wellbeing. Our brains can literally benefit from being surrounded by nature.

If you want another benefit of exercise, think lymphatic system. Unlike the cardiovascular system with the heart automatically pumping fluid, the lymph system relies on our body movements as a pump. Without movement that forces the lymphatic fluid to drain, toxins collect stagnantly in the lymph instead of leaving the body. Any type of exercise, such as walking, weight lifting or swimming, helps flush toxins in the lymph.

During these challenging times, I hope you enjoy and experience the many benefits of exercise, both physically and mentally.
