Happy, Healthy Mind – Become Aware of Your Needs

Happy, Healthy Mind – Become Aware of Your Needs
As you may know, at the recommendation of my life coach at the beginning of the year, I am rereading a book by Cheryl Richardson called Extreme Self Care. The first chapter really zeroes in on ending our legacy of self deprivation. It definitely resonated with me. But I don’t think I am alone.  It is common for those in roles of daily taking care of others needs, to stop paying attention to their own needs. She mentioned that we especially fall back into old patterns of self neglect during really stressful life circumstances. We can use food to stuff our feelings of resentment and frustration. Rather than asking for help and giving ourselves the space to breath, we go into overdrive caring for others needs while seriously neglecting our own.
A really important sentence that stood out to me was, “awareness is a powerful catalyst for positive changes”. That is so true in my case. As I have been seriously dedicated to my own health and self care for over three years now, I am now aware when I fall back into old patterns of self neglect. Usually the overwhelming feelings that will resurface for me are anxiety, resentment, irritability, and frustration. That is the time I check in with myself, identify the problem and ask myself what I need. The answer usually always comes back to giving myself compassion and love. Thankfully, I have been able to be aware and pay close attention to how, why, and where I feel deprived.
So I challenge you to become aware of your needs and ask yourself the same questions. Where do you feel deprived? What do you need more of right now? What do you need less of? Who or what is causing you to feel resentful or irritable? What is your soul yearning for? If you take the time to listen, really listen to the answers, you to can become aware of your needs and make the changes needed. You will then be able to achieve optimal health, wellness and happiness.
